Happy Birthday John: John Lennon 70th Birthday Project

I took this project on because Lennon has meant so much to me since my earliest childhood and ended up working on EMI digital for over a year. Here, I worked with EMI UK to put the pieces together from a standing start in celebration what would have been the 70th of this remarkable man. Tentpole events, sweeps, YouTube campaigns – there were many aspects to this project, but first we had to get the basics right.

Creative direction, original design concept, and project management

The Lennon site in place was a one-pager that had not been updated in several years. We replaced it with an image-rich, full-bleed-photo styled site, built by the wonderful Diet Strychnine, that included all of Lennon’s videos and drawings and a wonderful archive of personal photos. Unfortunately little of the original design remains beyond the header.

Lennon Facebook Page

Can you believe that in 2010, there was no Facebook page dedicated to Lennon? Neither could I. I actually built this page myself. It started at zero. Today it has over 16 million Likes.

Google Doodle

We certainly can’t take credit for this creative (the Doodle team is stellar), but we created enough excitement around the project that when pitched Google agreed it was worth a Doodle….and released their first animated, musical Doodle ever.
